Birmingham Tips & Recycling Centres: 5 You Should Know

There are five local tips across Birmingham which residents can access. As long as you can present identification confirming you live in the city, such as a driving license, council tax or utility bill letter. To access any of these sites, you must book on the Birmingham HWRC's website before you arrive to dispose of your waste. Before you visit one of these recycling centres, consider these booking rules:  

  • You cannot book less than two hours before your intended visit
  • You cannot book more than three days in advance
  • You can book two visits at the same time

1. Sutton Coldfield Recycling Centre

Located within this north Birmingham tip, the Castle Bromwich site includes a reuse shop that accepts donations of household goods, furniture, electrical items, bric-a-brac, bicycles, garden tools and lawnmowers. If the shop is closed, please do not leave donations outside the gate.

There’s also a dedicated area for gas bottles — whether full or empty, they must not be placed in the metals skip. If you’re unsure, speak to a member of staff on site for guidance.

  • April to October: 7am to 9pm (Monday to Friday), 8am to 6pm (Saturday and Sunday)

2. Perry Barr Recycling Centre

Located in northwest Birmingham, the Perry Barr tip accepts a wide range of household waste except business or trade waste and materials from landlords, builders, or house clearance services.

Opening Hours:

  • April to October: 7am to 9pm (Monday to Friday), 8am to 6pm (Saturday and Sunday)
  • November to March: 8am to 6pm (Monday to Friday), 8am to 4.30pm (Saturday and Sunday)

 

3. Castle Bromwich Recycling Centre

If you’re based in the north east of Birmingham and need to get rid of everyday household or garden waste, Castle Bromwich Recycling Centre offers a convenient and reliable option.

Address: Tameside Drive, B35 7AG

Opening Hours:

  • April to October: 7am to 9pm (Monday to Friday), 8am to 6pm (Saturday and Sunday)
  • November to March: 8am to 6pm (Monday to Friday), 8am to 4.30pm (Saturday and Sunday)

 

4. Tyseley Tip

Vehicle restrictions:

  • April to October: 7am to 9pm (Monday to Friday), 8am to 6pm (Saturday and Sunday)
  • November to March: 8am to 6pm (Monday to Friday), 8am to 4.30pm (Saturday and Sunday)

 

5. Kings Norton Tip

Before booking a visit to Kings Norton Recycling Centre, please note that large domestic appliances (LDAs), Tetra Pak, books, and fluorescent tubes are not accepted at this site due to ongoing redevelopment. This is expected to be completed by October 2027.

  • April to October: 10am to 10pm (Monday to Friday), 8am to 6pm (Saturday and Sunday)
  • November to March: 10am to 6pm (Monday to Friday), 8am to 3.40pm (Saturday and Sunday)

 

Accepted Waste at All Birmingham Recycling Centres

All Birmingham tips accept a wide range of household, garden, and electrical waste—here’s what you can bring:

Household and Bulky Waste

  • Carpets and mattresses
  • Bulky items such as bed frames, sofas, upholstered furniture, and dining tables or chairs
  • Hard plastics

Recyclables

  • Green garden waste
  • Cardboard and paper
  • Glass and metal
  • Textiles and shoes
  • Books*
  • Tetra Pak and Pringles tubes*
  • Coffee pods (both plastic and aluminium)

Wood and DIY Waste

  • Wood and wood-based products (e.g. MDF, chipboard)
  • Soil
  • Hardcore and rubble (up to eight 25kg bags or equivalent)

Electronic and Electrical Waste (WEEE)

  • Waste electrical items including small appliances
  • TVs and CRT monitors
  • Fridges and freezers
  • Large domestic appliances (LDAs)*

Hazardous and Vehicle Waste

  • Car tyres (maximum of five)
  • Car batteries
  • Engine oil
  • Cooking oil
  • Water-based paint and leftover paint
  • Fluorescent tubes*
  • Gas bottles and canisters (must be placed in the secure gas area—ask staff for help)
