Bournemouth beachfront with recycling and waste bins

Looking for your closest Bournemouth recycling centre? If you’re planning to drop off some old rubbish with your local council, but you’re not sure where to start, this guide will tell you everything you need to know about the rubbish tips and refuse centres in Bournemouth. Whether you need to dispose of a few plastic bottles or a room full of furniture and waste, your options are varied and available in all areas of Bournemouth.

Follow our guide to find out about your local HWRCs, the most convenient WEEE recycling centres in Bournemouth and clothing bins for you to drop off your secondhand clothes if you can’t reach the tip.

Bournemouth Recycling Centre

Located above Bear Cross and just north of Kinson, the Bournemouth Recycling Centre is a major facility serving residents across the city. You can reach the centre via Ringwood Road, a major route through Bear Cross and West Howe. You’ll need to prove that you live in the area to use the centre, but once cleared for entry, you can drop off everything from coffee pods to tyres.

Asbestos can be accepted at the Bournemouth tip, but it’s subject to several strict rules to keep both you and employees safe. Only bonded asbestos cement can be dropped off at the Millhams community recycling centre, and it must be double wrapped in plastic in order to drop it off safely. Disposing of asbestos may also cost a fee, so make sure to call ahead to check the terms before you bring it in!

Other items you can dispose of at the Bournemouth HWRC include gas bottles, garden waste, general waste, wood and lumber, plasterboard, mattresses and electrical appliances. Commercial waste can also be dropped off at the recycling centre, although companies are unable to use free services and must pay for waste disposal.

Booking Required? No

Vehicle Restrictions: No vans over 3,500kg or towing trailers, no Lutons, no tippers, flatbeds or horse boxes, no tractors, no 3-day hire vans

Address: Ringwood Rd, Bournemouth BH11 9LQ

Opening Hours: 9:00am to 5:00pm April to Septemeber, and 9:00am to 4:00pm October to March (Monday to Sunday)

Christchurch Recycling Centre

Another recycling centre in the Bournemouth area is in Christchurch, located in Somerford by the Christchurch Bypass. Operated by the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council, the Christchurch Recycling Centre is subject to many of the same rules in place for HWRCs in the county. Similarly to the Bournemouth Recycling Centre, you’ll need to present identification in order to dispose of your waste at the facility.

At Christchurch, you can get rid of a wide range of household rubbish such as wood, plasterboard, ink cartridges, mattresses, cooking oil, batteries and garden waste. Just like its counterpart, you can also dispose of limited (and contained) asbestos at the site, although it must be double-wrapped in plastic, and it should only be in the form of bonded cement.

Wimborne Household Recycling Centre

You’ll find the Wimborne Household Recycling Centre just north of the A31 in Wimborne Minster. A smaller facility than the city-side HWRCs, Wimborne is nevertheless equipped to handle plenty of day-to-day waste items and tricky rubbish solutions such as WEEE recycling in Bournemouth. Some of the trickier types of waste Wimborne can accept include aerosol cans, batteries, cooking oil, food waste, phones, vapes and rubble.

Since Wimborne is a smaller facility, it can’t accept asbestos as DIY rubbish - you’re better off driving into Bournemouth to drop it off at an alternative recycling centre. The centre can’t accept glass or glass bottles, although local bottle banks are available nearby.

Booking Required? No

Vehicle Restrictions: No trailers over 1.2 x 1.8 metres, no vans over 3,500kg, no tippers, no pickups with trailers, no horse boxes, no tractors.

Address: Brook Road, Wimborne, Dorset, BH21 2BH

Opening Hours: 9:00am to 5:00pm April to September, and 9:00am to 4:00pm October to March (Monday to Sunday)

Clothes, Textile & Plastic Recycling Banks Near Me

If you don’t have time to drop off your waste at a recycling centre, you wouldn’t be the only one! It takes a lot of effort to pack up your car, pump up your tyres and wait in the queue alongside everyone else with excess rubbish - and even then, you’ll need to sort it into the bins on the way out of your car!

If you don’t fancy going through the extra steps, you can always use a nearby bin or recycling bank to dispose of your items ethically. These drop-off points are often available for clothes, textiles and bottles, and supermarkets frequently provide battery banks for you to leave your batteries safely.

JD Wetherspoon PLC

The most central battery bank in Bournemouth is at JD Wetherspoons’ The Moon in the Square pub, located just north of the ODEON in the town centre. This drop off is battery-exclusive, and - like most battery banks - is only available when the shop is open. You can find the Moon in the Square just off Gervis Place Road in central Bournemouth.

Address: 4-8 Exeter Rd, Bournemouth BH2 5AQ

Opening Hours:  8:00am - 12:00am Sunday to Thursday, and 8:00am - 1:00am on Fridays and Saturdays

The Furlong Car Park

Looking for cardboard recycling banks in Bournemouth? The Furlong Car Park bin is located just off the A31 in Ringwood, next to the Furlong shopping centre. The bin can accept a wide range of recyclables including cardboard, paper, metal, bottles and even glass!

Address: The Furlong, Ringwood, BH24 1AT

Opening Hours:  N/A

Bransgore Car Park

One of the closest recycling bottle banks near you is at the Bransgore car park on Betsy Lane, located a short drive north of Bournemouth. This particular bin accepts everything from glass bottles to paper, metal and plastic, and is a great option if you live quite a drive away from the Bournemouth recycling centres.

Address: Betsy Lane, Bransgore, BH23 8AQ

Opening Hours:  N/A
