Top Five Zero Waste & Eco-Friendly Shops To Visit in Swindon
Sustainable shopping is more than a trend in the UK — it’s a practical way for households to reduce waste and make everyday choices that benefit the planet. If you want to shop with less waste in and around Swindon, here’s a no-nonsense guide to the best local zero-waste shops and refill stores.
1. Weigh It Up Refill Shop (Highworth)

Tucked away in the Market Place, Weigh It Up is a bright, welcoming refill shop in Highworth, run by local couple Matthew and Michelle Aherne. With a huge passion for the environment, the natural world, and a love for food, they brought these interests together to offer people a way of shopping more consciously, opening their shop and cafe in 2020.
The shop stocks over 100 refillable pantry staples, including pasta, rice, oats, herbs, spices and baking ingredients, as well as teas, coffees and dried fruit. You’ll also find a wide range of eco household products, natural cleaning liquids (with 17 refillable options from Miniml), toiletries and condiments.

Some of their customer favourites include the many organic products, the many items that they can weigh as much as they need to reduce food waste, household cleaning products - with the washing up liquid topping the bill - and organic coffee roasted in Bristol. Matthew added, "We serve the coffee in our coffee shop and people are always pleased to be able to buy it to take home."

Matthew shared the following advice for people starting their zero-waste journey:
"Do what you can manage start with something small that feels achievable like switching to refill washing up liquid or refilling your herb jars.
Anne Marie Bonneau said it so well — 'We don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.'"
If you want to cut down on plastic, Weigh It Up makes it simple to get started. Free parking nearby adds to the convenience, making it a popular choice for weekly top-ups or first-time refillers.
Address: 41 High Street, Highworth, Swindon, SN6 7AQ
Opening hours: 9am–5pm (Monday to Saturday)
2. Refill Station (Royal Wootton Bassett)

Refill Station is a mobile zero-waste shop run by Louise Cheesman, a Swindon local. Based in Royal Wootton Bassett, about 10–15 minutes’ drive from Swindon, it brings plastic-free products to you through local markets and home visits.
HIPPO asked Louise what inspired her to open a zero-waste stall:
"I used to work in a lovely Refill shop called The Town Pantry in Royal Wootton Bassett which sadly shut in December 23. I loved the shop so much but it wasn't feasible for me to take it on. As an alternative I'm mobile, using my trusty ebike & trailer as much as I can!"

You’ll find cleaning refills, kitchen basics, and toiletries — all chosen to cut single-use plastic. Most products are cruelty-free, vegan and sustainably made where possible.
Popular products on the stall include refill products such as spiced ginger washing-up liquid and laundry liquid with a fresh cologne fragrance, made with natural extracts including patchouli, cedarwood, eucalyptus and lemon. Deodorants are another customer favourite, with a range of aluminium-free and plastic-free options from brands including Wild, Fussy and Fit Pit.
Louise has a standout favourite to share with you, a soap brand that even has fragrances that includes a plantable label:
"I’d also say the gorgeous Somerset Natural Soaps are bestsellers too. Made using the cold pressed method the designs are stunning, like a work of art and the fragrance is devine. Winner of the Vegan Beauty Awards it pairs amazingly with a Loofco Soap rest. Stopping that soggy soap bottom and messy sink. Once the soap rest is past its best you can clean the sink with it, then compost it! You won’t regret buying one!"
We asked Louise to share some tips for you if you want to go zero-waste and plastic-free at home:
"Every little bit helps, even if you switch one or two products to zero-waste, you'll be saving plastic bottles from production in the double figures per year! You can buy as little or as much as you like and free samples are available too, please don't hesitate to ask. I've refilled 1700+ bottles to date, which when stacked up one on top of the other they would be taller than The Shard in London! Why not give it a go today & help reach the Burj Khalifa and beyond!"
Alongside the free deliveries powered by her eBike, Louise also sets up at Royal Wootton Bassett Market on Wednesdays (8:30am - 1pm). Check her Facebook page for times and updates.
Address: Royal Wootton Bassett Market, High Street, SN4 7AU.
