Household waste, such as old furniture and mattresses, was the most commonly fly-tipped waste in Bristol last year. While Bristol City Council is working to reduce this issue, residents and businesses can also help keep Bristol's streets clean and safe. One way to do this is by donating unwanted items to charity shops, giving them a second life instead of throwing them away.

If you're looking for charity shops across the city that accept furniture donations or want to know what charities do with your donations, we've got you covered. Here’s a list of five local charity shops in Bristol that accept different types of donations, including those that also offer free furniture collection.

1. Salvation Army’s Filton Donation Centre

Located near Filton, the Salvation Army’s Filton Donation Centre is a large charity shop in Bristol accepting furniture, homeware, clothing, and electricals. They aim to support the local community by providing affordable second-hand goods. Smaller items like clothes and shoes can be placed in their clothing banks. They also offer a free collection service for bulky furniture in the Bristol area.

The bulky furniture they accept includes beds, mattresses, pine wardrobes, curtains, and bedding. For hygiene and safety reasons, they do not accept used duvets and pillows. For electrical items, check their list of accepted donations, as some may be accepted provided that they are not damaged or have cracked screens.

Donating to the Salvation Army helps fund community projects, including homelessness support, poverty relief, and elderly care.

Address: Unit 1, 31-39 Gloucester Rd N, Bristol BS7 0SH

Opening Hours: 9am to 5pm (Monday, Wednesday to Saturday) and 9.45am to 5pm (Tuesday)

2. St Peter’s Hospice Furniture Charity Shop

St Peter’s Hospice has multiple locations accepting donations across Bristol. The charity shop in Clifton offers second-hand furniture and electricals, and welcome donations of these item, provided they are in saleable condition.

The shop provides a free furniture collection for local residents, allowing them to donate up to six pieces of bulky items, including electrical appliances and upholstered goods with fire labels attached. To arrange a collection, residents can simply book a time online that suits them. The shop also welcomes donations of various homeware items, including throws, lamps, mirrors, and tableware.

Alongside reselling furniture, their staff are actively involved with reusing material and making sure they limit waste whenever possible - such as Sally at their Henleaze store promoting sustainable fashion!

Curious about how your donations support their services? They help raise funds for St Peter’s Hospice, which provides 24/7 care and support for adults living with life-limiting illnesses in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and North Somerset. They provide specialised care both in patients' homes and at their inpatient unit in Brentry, Bristol.

3. SOFA Project

Located a short distance from the city centre, the SOFA (Shifting Old Furniture Around) Project is a charity and social enterprise that accepts discarded furniture and homeware, helping residents dispose of household goods easily while diverting reusable items from landfill.

While they have multiple shops, their charity shop in Bristol city centre on Gloucester Road accepts furniture, homeware, and old paint from local households and businesses. The SOFA Project welcomes a wide range of furniture and homeware donations, provided they are in good condition. They also accept old paint, as long as the tin is at least half full and still usable.

For bulky items, the charity also offers free or low-cost collection services across the greater Bristol area. If you are unsure about what type of furniture they accept or are interested in for their collection service, feel free to contact them or fill in their online form.

4. Shelter’s Bristol Promenade Community Shop

Shelter is a charity dedicated to tackling homelessness and supporting those that are facing housing difficulties. There are multiple Shelter shops in Bristol, including locations on Gloucester Road and in Clifton.

These shops accept donations of second-hand items, including fashion, books, and small homeware items, as long as they are in good condition. However, they may not be able to accept large furniture or electrical goods, so it’s best to check with the store before donating.

By donating your pre-loved items at a Shelter store, you are helping to fund their mission to ensure that everyone has a safe and secure home. This also supports their homelessness care services and their housing rights campaign.

Their hospices across the South West provide free care to families in Devon, North Somerset, and Cornwall.

The shop welcomes donations of children’s clothing, toys, books, maternity wear, and baby equipment such as pushchairs, highchairs, and cots. However, for safety and hygiene reasons, they do not accept certain items, such as children’s safety equipment (including baby walkers and booster seats), as well as second-hand cot mattresses or hand-knitted toys.
